Bulgaria: Veliko Tarnovo

17 september 2013 - Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgarije

Veliko Tarnovo
Veliko Tarnovo is a beautiful, old and small city in Bulgaria. I arrived in the evening, the view then is really beautiful. From the train station were 2 korean people and with them I went for a walk through the city by night, I didn't like them so after that I tried to avoid them. Sometimes there is a light show in the city, but only when big groups pay for it, I was only staying in this city for one night so unfortunately I didn't see the light show. From one point (it's lower) you can still see the city, you have the view over a castle and all the lights on the hill. In Bulgaria, I stayed in Hostel Mostel in every city, besides a free breakfast they also offer you a light pasta meal each evening, so before going into the city we had some free (nondelicious, but stomach-filling) pasta.

During the day I woke up early, because at 1900 I would already go to Sofia. These kind of days felt really like rushing because in the morning you have to pack your suitcase and make everything ready so that when you come back to the hostel you are ready to leave and with my big Luggage (with also clothes for Istanbul) it was always a horror. I got up early and just when I walked out of the hostel I saw one of the koreans I was trying to avoid, I said;; bye I 'm gonig now , see you later and I went away quickly. That day I felt like I wanted to be alone and explore the city by myself, other people don't Always want to take risks and go into unknown places to discover things you otherwise wouldn't discover and since I only had one day to do this, I  preferred to go out alone. First I walked into a bush because I wanted to walk next to the river, this proved more difficult than I thought at first but I made it.  It was really peaceful, but unfortunately not a river to swim in. Also, this day was the first warm day for me since 2 weeks, made me really happy!

Later, when I walked towards the city center I  went up a street and saw all kinds of cute tourist shops, also the graffiti on the street was amazing, really creative. I am going to post some pictures of this. Then I saw a shop where they woodcarved a lot of things. It was really amazing , I choose some small things as gifts for my cousins in Curacao and let the man of the shop burned their names (in Bulgarian letters) in it. Then I walked towards the city center and at one moment I asked someone to point to me where I was on the map and where I was, was not on the map. There was a fruit market and there were just heaps of red peppers and melons, some people bought so many I didn't know if they had a lot of mouths to feed or they just really loved red peppers. I walked so far, while looking at all the buildings, without knowing where I was, just the way I like getting lost. Later I found my way back ofcourse. I loved: Ferrero Rocher icecream, hmmm.

In Veliko Tornovo you also had a castle that was a big tourist attraction. What I liked was that you could walk everywere and there were signs of danger, you had to watch where to walk, so it felt less like a tourist attraction where you can't enter the more dangerous areas.
