Romania; Brasov and Sibiu

10 september 2013 - Brasov, Roemenië

Brasov
In Brasov I stayed in a hostel one night and I found a host on couchsurfing for the other night. I arrived and I was in the dormroom with one guy (an adult) from America, we talked and decided to go see some castles. First castle Bran (which is known as Dracula castle) and then castle Rasnov, it is inbetween Brasov and castle Bran and much bigger, nicer and less turistic than castle Bran. The second castle we could climb to on a track that ran through a mountain. It was just beautiful and nothing really special. Also I found a bracelet of leather and my name was carved in it, my name is Romanian and Italian and normally I can never find it, but then I lost it later...

The second day I stayed with a host, he came to the center of Brasov with the car to pick me up and then we went up to the mountains. we parked the car and went walking, first it was flat and we saw a herd of cows eating grass, no fences nothing  but they were not wild cows either, they belonged to someone. We walked next to the river all the time. This guy grew up in Brasov and knew this mountain like his pocket. The mountain started to go up and I really felt that my condition has become worse than before, one negative thing about travelling, you need all the time to check out everything and then you're tired and no time for exercise :(. At one point we couldn't go up further because I didn't have the right shoes, it really makes me want to go back to Romania another time and have a backpack and the right equipment to do things like this. On the way down we met an older couple and they started to talk about me in Romanian and point at me, like I was an animal :P the man was just very curious where I was from, he thought that I looked like a viking which made me laugh, it's how he described northern people.
After the mountain we went to the house to drop my suitcase and after some relaxing we walked towards the city center. The funny thing is that this day was the first day of Oktoberfest, there are so many Germans in Romania that some people talk German and so they also have this. I've never been to one in Germany and now my first time was in Romania. It was pretty fun,  they had a lot of stalls and a huge tent where people drank beer and sang sungs, we ate some local food and they also had a special kind of wine that made you really drunk before you could expect it. The guy from couchsurfing was hosting 4 other people and we walked together back to the house because the guy wanted to watch a football match.

The next morning I left for the bus station to get a bus to Sibiu, it was like a minivan and the trip would take about 3 hours. I had to go to Sibiu because I forgot my camera in Cluj-Napoca and a guy left it in the hostel there for me. It was really funny because when I arrived I saw him at the bus station to get a bus to Brasov.
At the bus station in Brasov I met a guy from America, he was born here and was now travelling the country together with an older lady who could explain him more things and help him with the language. So when we were in Sibiu, the guy who had my camera couldn't get into the bus because it was full, it seemed like he couldn't leave but last-minute the older lady told the bus driver to show some courtesy , this is a foreign person and let him on the bus, he will stand (on the way to Sibiu a lot of people were standing as well). He was very thankful and it was nice to see what it does to a person if you robb them of their courtesies :P.
The older lady with who the American guy was travelling was going to cook and we would meet later, she would make a Romanian dish. We would communicate through fb but unfortunately it didn't work out. Later I found out that he had come by the hostel but I wasn;t there because I went to the bus station for information at that moment but I just read his text message the next morning :(.

Sibiu
I arrived in Sibiu around 4 O'clock and when I came to the hostel I saw someone who was also on the bus from Brasov. After getting rid of the luggage we went into the town together. Sibiu is not so big but it is very cute. It was saturday and there were three big markets on the main squares. One of pottery and ceramics, you saw little birds made of ceramic everywhere and if you put water in them you can make bird sounds. One of jewellery and food and the other I forgot, but food was basically everywhere. I tried something new, but at this point I have forgotten the name. We tried to find things to do by looking into a sort of lonely planet book and eventually went to an etnographic museum, you would think to see typical romanian things, but they also had an Afrika collection. it was interesting but now i have forgotten what was. The man who was working there gave us some flyers; kado, kado, he said, because a lot of people in Romania actually speak German and a lot of cities have German names. The next day we wanted to go to Bucarest, from there it is very easy to go to Bulgaria.

We went to the train and bus station to get information, after some funny conversations in broken english, german and some spanish mix we got to the conclusion that we could buy tickets on the train the next day. So the next day, we were there on time, and the bus was full... so we had to wait 4 hours to get the next bus, now we bought a ticket in advance for the next bus. because of this there was not so much time to discover Bucarest. Bucarest is in general not so interesting, a lot of people have bad opinions about it so I felt like I wanted to form my own opinion about the capital of Romania. We arrived late, stayed in a hostel and the next morning got a train to Bulgaria. Then I had to say bye to my friend unfortunately :( But we would meet again in Istanbul, because when I would arrive in Istanbul, he would have 9 hours to wait in the airport so we could meet again.
